Wind Energy

Banks Developments' renewable energy team researches and develops opportunities in this growing energy sector. Since 2005 the company has applied for planning permission for 10 wind farms across Northern England and Scotland.

In April 2009 construction was completed at West Durham wind farm after we successfully obtained project finance to build the largest wind farm to date in the North East of England.

This marked a milestone in the company’s success in transferring the skills it has developed over the last 30 years in the energy industry to renewable energy provision.

Our current renewable energy portfolio is:

· 24 MW operational at West Durham wind farm

· 44 MW consented and in pre-construction on our Hazlehead, Armistead and Marr wind farms

· 60 MW across four planning applications awaiting determination by various planning authorities

· 200 MW identified on sites awaiting submission for planning permission

Our wider business aims are

  • We are currently promoting a wide range of onshore wind farm developments to help meet regional renewable energy targets; from small three turbine sites to sites featuring more than 30 turbines. At any one time we are working towards gaining permission for 250MW of electricity capacity from renewable resources.
  • We are also working with our property team to develop more sustainable residential and commercial developments, aiming towards zero carbon developments. We are investigating all sizes of micro wind turbines for urban environments alongside district heating schemes powered by biomass or other renewable or sustainable energy sources
